Pigmentation refers to the coloring of the skin, hair, or eyes. It is determined by the presence of a pigment called melanin, which is produced by specialized cells called melanocytes. Melanin is responsible for the color of the skin and hair, and it helps to protect the skin from the damaging effects of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays.

There are two types of pigmentation: hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation. Hyperpigmentation is an increase in the production of melanin, which can cause dark spots or patches on the skin. It can be caused by sun exposure, hormonal changes, aging, and certain medications. Hypopigmentation, on the other hand, is a decrease in the production of melanin, which can cause light or white spots on the skin. It can be caused by conditions such as vitiligo or albinism.
